Master Pepakura List
« on: September 30, 2013, 10:02:08 AM »
Gentlemen:
I know we have like six or seven different "master Pep lists" because I just went through all the forum threads to move them into their correct board. In the interest of collecting *ALL* the Pepakura files that you want to share (at least one person was adamant about not giving away his files), I started this thread. One of the things we wanted to do with a new website was to collect all the files and put them into a file-sharing page on the website. One of the requests that a member had, was to ensure that we credit the people who make these files.

To that end, I'm requesting that you link all the files you have along with their creator's name if you aren't the creator.

Example:
Helmet of Eliphas - Dawn of War 2 (Ripped by Djinn)

Link to file: http://obscuruscrusade.com/images/EliphasHelm.pdo
Notes - This file is NOT unfolded yet

Banshee Power Sword (Ripped and Unfolded by Djinn)

Link to file: http://obscuruscrusade.com/images/eldarpowersword.pdo
Notes: This sword has been unfolded, but not scaled.

Something sort of like the above - eventually we will get a website going to host things provided by the community for the community, and pictures and descriptions would help immensely in the building of that in the future. Thank you to anyone who has put in the effort to unfold their files for the good of the community, you're all awesome.

I've got to go through and make those file name changes we talked about, but once I have, I'll add my files to the list

Cadian Helmet from the video game "Space Marine", unfolded by Kartoffel

Updated Download Link Here

The model itself was ported by wraithcat on Facepunch.  I decompiled it and unfolded it.  The format is letter, and there are 12 pages in total.  The helmet is scaled to be 230 mm in height.

I prefer to keep my files linked in my own thread so I have control over the files.

Thanks,

Your files will always remain in your own thread. What we're doing here is compiling one single master list of Pepakura file locations and designating a portion of the website for people to upload their files (in essence, giving people a file-storage site). This has the added benefit of actually allowing people to receive credit for their work, something which isn't always done. I have probably a hundred or more files that have no known owner, which is a tragedy for any artists that want credit.

This endeavour is completely separate of the individual threads and is completely optional (the default is, if it's on the forums we'll add it unless the file owner doesn't want it up). If you don't want your files on that master list, that's perfectly acceptable, though I guess logically it doesn't make sense since anyone can go download it from your thread. Either way, not a problem. Are you opting out?

As a final note: I swear I don't mean to sound argumentative, I'm just providing more clarification for anyone that doesn't quite understand what this repository is.

Cool, I would just like you to link to the master thread of my files, please/

Setting up a master file thread runs the risk of not getting updated and missing out on the additions and changes that will be made in my original thread.  I see the benefit to some extent but I prefer to have people go to my original thread so they can get the updates and changes all in one place.

For example I am moving all of my files over into a different folder format and If I change the links then you will have to make changes to the master thread. This way it save you the work of updating my links and I can control how my files are represented.

Thanks,

You know it would probably be better to do a Master Pepakura Page and the top post highlights each unfolder, pointing to the individuals thread.  That will high light the artists and keep the updating and control in the hand of the original creators.

Just a thought,

Those are really good ideas. Let me run by you what we're looking at, I kinda feel like we might be talking about the same thing. So, we're not creating a master forum thread (at least, not by intent). I want to make that clear up front. This forum thread is just for members to say "hey yeah, my files are here at this location" so that we can retrieve them and upload them for people who haven't been active in the community but want to share their work.

The original plan was just to grab all the threads for various Pep threads. I think that was done but it might be buried. Then I thought, why not just give them the ability to load it and host it on the website? Then I thought, why not just do THAT, but have it show up on a master index page? Like "click here to browse all of Henrik's files" and then voila!, a list of all the files he loaded. "Click here to browse all of Djinn's files" and same thing. So we're building our own file-sharing software platform so that you and I and Djinn and anyone else can load our files on our own, since we're active on the boards. The upload platform will be limited to specific file types, that way nobody's loading music and video and porn (none of which I am opposed to, but our host might be). So for example we'd lock it down to PDO, PDF, STL, OBJ files. The platform would be tied in to the forum user database via single-service login (our DB is encrypted better than most websites and we're also going SSL) so you don't have to manage two accounts -- it's one log-in, and it's shared between the forums and the platform. This is largely so that we can just set usergroups -- that way, some random spambot doesn't sign up and start loading junk to the site, but it's also for avoidance of annoyance (hey that rhymes!).

What we can also do is, and this goes along with your second post, on that master list of contributors on the index page we can also list off the threads for people, such as your thread for example, if you didn't load anything or didn't want to load anything. That way it's not like we cut you out of sight. Or something. I think I may be explaining that part wrong.

We also have an SMF mod that does blogging so we can set up blogs for users via usergroup, that way if you want to condense your forum thread into a tutorial, BAM problem solved. Build threads are good, don't get me wrong -- I don't want to discourage anyone, in the least. These are additional options. Sort of like our own internal Pirate Bay for Pep (but more reputable and with credit) and our own Instructables. People can still comment on the tutorial, or you can say "For more info here is the link to my build thread, contact me there" and then you only have one point of interaction. Which is totally up to you.

Okay I understand.

I don't want to participate in a large repertory of hosted files here on the OC like Pirate Bay.

I want complete control over my files and I want to host them on my host and I want display the how I want to display them in my Pep Thread.

So if you do a Master List, please list me with the following copy:

Chwbcc's Pepakura Files
Here is a collection of Pepakura files from the Wookie Workshop created by Chwbcc.
These files are free to shared and modified as long as they are not hosted else where and proper credit is given to all of the artists who have worked on these files.

This way I can maintain credit, still control my work and people can access it from a central location on the master list.

Thanks,
chwbcc

I think the idea for the files hosted here is only if they wanted it.  I do like the idea where we have a forum section for files.  Then under each one let each person with ORIGIONAL files post under there.  Maybe have a mod create the thread when the person requests it.  They would have to provide some kind of proof.  If they have some that they modified from somewhere else, they would have to get permission from the original creator to post under their own.

We would also have to establish, as a community, what is original.  Would the person have to start them from a 3D model or even create the 3D model?  If someone unfolds a 3D model differently or modifies a file from an unknown source, could they then claim it?

Not saying which is right but It would consolidate a lot as well as give people control over their work.  they can then decide how they want to host them.  Either using this site or linking to their own.

God only knows where my original horrible files went to for a Space Marine but now that the game files are being used there's no point in my old files. I should have Marine files still on the tamasoft gallery though.
