Cilegray's Storm Warden Build - Complete; time for upgrades
« on: September 21, 2013, 09:03:00 AM »
Allright, so long story short, I've been building my 935 scale Power Armor for about a month now, and
until recently had mostly followed other builds and just replicated, so I didn't see much reason to post
about it here.

Fast forward to now; where I couldn't settle on a particular color for the Glospex (eyes). In an attempt
to circumvent the problem, I installed 4 RGB LEDs which are controlled with an arduino compatible "FLORA" device from Adafruit. It allows for basic coding to control the LEDs individually; giving me full control over the eyes. While at it; I decided to go a little over board and add a Light Sensor, whichs picks up whatever color is in front of it, and matches to eyes to that color.

Here's a few preview videos of the operation. The helmet is awaiting paint, so the lenses won't be
mounted inside for a while...

That's all for now, I'll upload more shots once I make significant progress; or if anyone has any questions on the setup

Edit : Added a push-button to control the refresh of the color. I also made it 'quick swap' to full red on a short press for 10 seconds... I have some ideas in mind that'll use this feature later on.

Nice job going high tech!  The ability to change the eye color will be great!

I could, but the company that sells these gadgets allready have dozens of very detailed tutorials about a myriad of projects and applications. This was my first time using an arduino and the code was pretty simple to adapt to my needs. Wiring was pretty straightforward and hard to screw up.

To attack the round flat LEDs, I simply sandwiched the lens with a small sliver of foam that I split down the middle to give a bigger surface area to glue the LED on. Here's what it looks like wired up and glued down to the lens.

Parts needed for this build were :

1 x Flora (you could get away with a Gemma or a Trinket and simpler code, IIRC)
4 x RGB LED NeoPixels
1 x TCS sensor if you want to go down the color sensing road.

All parts are available from adafruit. I recommend ordering from them as they ship rather fast, and offer bulletproof aftersale service via their forums .

Here's a few links to tutorials on their websites that I learned a lot from. Let me know if you have specific questions about the build.

Might as well post a few shots of the actual build; sorry for the 3 year old phone camera quality; at least it's not bandwidth heavy. Started work on the cod piece last night

Just a little update; did some detailing on the chest piece. I'm doing a MK V design, even tho the mid section of the actual MK V model is different; I'm going to stick mostly to the MK VII design for mobility's sake.

No, those are standard on the Mk V Torso. I don't think I could go with anything bigger in terms of scale than the standard marine.

On another note, finished a boot tonight.

Thats a good idea for the MK V design...I use some cable tubing for that...maybe I steal your midsectiondesign...
but I want that look...

I like that look from Ortan Cassius armour, the cables going in the skull. I have a skull on my chest already so I think its the easiest way.

I like the look of your torso too...
