Deathco costume first try

Hello,
I work a bit on a Space Marine costume...
This is my first costume ever. I started a few pepakura costumes but I never had the time for it to finish one only one helmet have I half finished.
I talked to my friends and 4 of them and I wanna do a small Deathco squad.
This is the first costume of 5.
Now I try a foam version and I am surprised how quick you get the basic structure ready. I worked only one to one and a half houre at 4 days after 14 houres work a day and I got the upper torso one shoulder and the helmet glued together and the shape is smooth without sanding and filling.
I know it needs more work to get rid of the gaps but I like it so far.
Here is what I got so far

So if I get this right, you are going to do 5 suits? Individually? No molding? That is a lot of work that I hope your friends appreciate!

Yes, but I they help me to get them ready...this one is only a tryout or "prototype"...
For molding I have no place to do that. And more work is more time to learn...[img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' />

You're gonna finish, then look back at the first suit you made of the 5 and think it looks terrible compared to the last you you made... and then you'll want to rebuild it! [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' />

Hope you are'nt right...
I give my best to stay close as I can to Henrick's build...exept the color...
today I do the next shoulderpad and then I start to build the backpack.
Then I need a stand or something.
Hope I get the base ready in the next 2 weeks. Then I can go with it at the Modell, Hobby, Spiel fair in Leipzig from 3.-6. october.
But it must be actually ready before next year March for the Bookfair in Leipzig.
I think its enough time...i hope so...

It honestly might be faster and cheaper to build a vacuform table if you are doing so many of the same.

that's a good start [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/cool.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='cool.gif' />
However, have you tried them on? Are those shoulders unmodified? straight from the pep file? you may want to look into Sylgian or Henrik's build - Sylgian trimmed down his shoulders about 4.5 inches from the length and 2 inches from the width, as they proved too big to be functional.
I just did that trimming down to my shoulders last Sunday so I thought I'd just remind you to check on the size [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' />

Thanks, no they are straight from the file. I do all parts before I change something to make the overall look good as I can.
Today is the last of six 12h shifts then I can do the other shoulder and the arms.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I don't have room for a vac table either but then there are always a lot of plastic fabrication places around that would be willing to do it for a price (~$100 for each run). While more expensive, obviously, than doing each suit by hand, the final product is Rock Star grade as long as your inner perfectionist gets to ride in the front seat during the making of the molds.

I dont found some plastic fab around my place. In east germany it is hard to find such an industry.
I think after the basic construction everyone can do some easy modifications with the foam. After get ready with my costume I help my friends to get it done and maybe give them a few useful tips.
And I can learn more for future projects.
Edit.: I am around 120

So let me get this straight; you've never done this before, and you want to make 5 suits - without flaws?
Good luck! [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' />
I agree with Render - the first few pieces are allways learning experiences - and you'll be a lot better the more you do [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /> IMHO Practice makes perfect - nobody likes a first-timer who do stuff perfect ... it takes away from the humility and community-feel of 'growing' with others.
I once did a Deathwatch Blood Angel (not Deathcompany) marine back in the day; before templates and mass-used files. Oooh.. those were the good ol' days with scratchbuilt, 100% unique and flawed suits <3
I wish you luck and will keep an eye out for your progress

Light bulb... Is THAT what "Deathco" is??? My bad... [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/unsure.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='unsure.gif' /> As you can see, I fully approve, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Best of luck for your build (s). [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' />

I try to do my best to get close to best work I know I read many tutorials and I learn from others mistakes I never said that my suite will be perfect.
(I have learned from you for example: small defects can be battledamage...[img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /> )
I think long about the building process and I think my glueing is a mess...[img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' />
But I figured out how I can do it with my skills, there are better ways for sure but I think I can make it and the best thing I can do is: I take my time and make all the parts as best I can.
I dont do 5 suits I do one and help my friends to get thiers ready.
Thanks for your attention.
Dont be shy and tell me mistakes I do and what I can make better.

The cool thing is; now you're here, and you're already so far! I'd say you're allready on your way to greatness and we'll be sure to help as much as we can [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />
Now I didn't intend to sound grumpy ( it's late here after all so I apologize)
It's good to see you take inspiration from what you think works! That's how we all do it [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />
Gluing is usually a mess, but with a little practice and a few tricks, it can be easy! If you want to smudge out hot glue or make it easier to remove before setting; a wet finger or wet piece of foam swept across it, will instantly cool it down!
We all have different skillsets! Thank god for that! Could you imagine a worl where everything was similar? There would be no diversity, no variety and no uniqueness [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' />
Yes - take your time - you've done a great job so far - keep going and if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask [img]http://i6.ifrm.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />
Ps. I'm not really a critic; if anything, I'm overly constructive and helpful! ( you learn to be like that when you work with kids for a living )
